March 2009 Mission Trip

March 2009 Mission Trip

Posted on Mar 27, 2009 by Sherry Lucas

We spent a busy week on the mission field. We added loaded baked potatoes to the menu for the flea market and meal sale at a fundraiser on March 14th. Money is being raised for the Niobrara Convocation which Rosebud is hosting in late June.  We had leftover potatoes so we delivered some to White Buffalo Calf Womens Shelter for their evening meal, took some to Spotted Tail Crisis Center, and made potato soup for the members of the Bishop's Committee meeting at Trinity Church the next day. In the afternoon of March 15th we attended a church service at Holy Spirit in Ideal.  Deacon George Medicine Eagle officiated.  We placed prayer rocks and the verse about them on each chair before the service. They were painted by the Sunday school children at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Woodville, TX.  After the service we served a spaghetti meal and held a giveaway.  We also spent time visiting with several members of the community.  On the 16th we went to Spotted Tail Crisis Center to play with the children,  read stories, and do crafts.  The morning of the 17th we went to White River Health Care Center to visit with the residents and give each a cute little styrofoam bunny made by the Sunday school children at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Sugar Land, TX.  Over the years we've gotten to know several residents there quite well and it's always nice to visit with them again.  A photo was taken of Shane Bear Heels who wrote the article about alcoholism that is in our article section. The photo is posted with his article on the website.  That evening we went to Soldier Creek and served a chicken tortilla soup meal with shamrock cookies, as it was St. Patrick's Day, for dessert.  We also held a giveaway there. The next evening we served a meal (chili and tortilla soup) to the children at Bible study at Trinity Church.  Afterwards we attended the Celtic Lenten service which was followed by a meal.  We left to return to Texas the next morning.  It was a terrific week, visiting with friends and meeting new ones.
