2010 Mission Trip

2010 Mission Trip

Posted on Jun 28, 2010 by Sherry Lucas

Our small, but mighty, mission team returned from a week long mission trip to Rosebud on June 20th. We've learned, over the years, no matter how large or small the team, good things are accomplished. We visited the nursing home on Sunday, our first day, and gave each resident a small clay pot, we'd painted and decorated for July 4th. Christine Dunham talked to our team while we were at the nursing home. She was visiting her husband who resides there now. She always likes to talk to the teams about her life on the Reservation and we really appreciate the information she gives us.

Most of our activities took place in Ideal, as planned. It is the tiny, remote community on the east end of Rosebud where we've ministered since 2003. We worshiped there at Holy Spirit Church on Sunday evening.  Quite a few of the children who would be in Bible School attended the service so it was a nice way to meet them before starting the lessons the next day. We presented the banner made by the children at the New Wineskins conference to the congregation. Mike Plenty Horse, who went to New Wineskins with us, assisted at the service.
We taught three lessons at Bible School; the Good Samaritan, the Ten Commandments, and Daniel and the Lion's Den. We had the children decorate a folder the first day in which to store their projects throughout the week and then take home the last day.  We also had them make a Good Samaritan booklet in which to record their good deeds daily.  They really seemed to enjoy adding to their folders the crafts that went along with the lessons plus some other craft projects.

On the last day of Bible School we hosted an evening community meal in Ideal. We also had a giveaway. People had donated clothing and household items for us to take there for this.

We held an Indian taco sale at Holy Spirit to raise money to help pay the church utility bills. They made the fry bread for this and NAIM provided the rest.  However, we shared the information about the cost of the sale so they can put that amount aside for future sales.
The Boys and Girls Club is really progressing well on Rosebud. They have clubs in three communities.   Many of the youth are participating in the club activities daily.  We didn't have time to get deeply involved with the club this visit due to their shorter hours. They were having leadership training of the new employees. However, we did go in one morning and the team members participated in some archery lessons.

It was another successful, rewarding trip. We hope to have an adult group go to Rosebud  April, 2011, and a youth and adult team go in July.
